Frequently Asked Questions

Navigating the field of special needs can be burdensome and confusing. Interactive Kids offers pathways for all learners and teachers.

Having a child receive an ASD diagnosis is a powerful, life-changing moment. You may feel unsure about the path forward. You may feel isolation and loneliness. You may even feel anger or sadness. These emotions are a natural reaction — as a parent, you love your child unconditionally — and help exists to chart a path forward to a brighter future for you, your child, and your family.

Individual states may have laws and guidelines that complement federal laws. Click here for quick access to state-specific information and resources for disability rights from government and other organizations’ websites.

We participate with several behavioral/mental health insurance providers for Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services provided to children diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Not all services may be covered. Before any begin, please contact your insurance provider for coverage information.

Developmental screening provides a quick check of your child’s development. It can be thought of a snapshot of your child’s motor, cognitive, language, and social-emotional skills. Screening will help determine if your child is meeting the appropriate milestones for their age.

The Controversy Around ABA

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a therapy that helps kids with autism learn skills and lessen problematic behavior like hurting themselves. There are several different forms of ABA. All are based on the idea that reinforcing certain behaviors will lead kids to repeat those behaviors. Studies have shown that ABA is effective, but some parents and autistic self-advocates do not support its use.

What Is Applied Behavior Analysis?

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a therapy that has been shown to help kids with autism learn skills and lessen problematic behavior like hurting themselves. Its effectiveness has been backed up by hundreds of studies.

All forms of ABA are based on the idea that rewarding certain behaviors will lead kids to repeat those behaviors. Early forms of ABA focused on breaking skills into very small steps and rewarding kids for doing each step correctly. In the past, kids might also have been punished for doing a step incorrectly.
